"My fitness journey began more than 20 years ago. I was not very athletic as a child, although I desperately wanted to be. I tried out for every sports team and dance troop, but was always disappointed. I wrote myself off as being the chubby child and focused on other things. However, that all changed in my early teens when I discovered the joy of home exercise videos. Suddenly I discovered a world where I could work out to the best of my ability, improve at my own pace, and feel no embarrassment whatsoever. This was truly life changing for me. The lack of coordination I’d felt with sports went away, and I had found something that I was good at that was also good for me.
The road since then has had its ups and downs. I’ve had periods where I was more or less focused, but I have always come back to serious exercise because it makes me feel so good and I enjoy seeing the results that I know hard work will bring. I have ventured out from home exercise videos to work out at the gym, and most recently hit the roads to train for two half marathons in 2013. However, with 2 small children at home, I have once again found myself back in the basement hitting the play button or using the equipment that I have to get my workouts done - when I can squeeze them in!
I have BS degrees in Biology and Psychology from Jacksonville University, and my MS in Integrative Biosciences with an emphasis in Immunology from Penn State. After leaving graduate school I knew my calling was to turn my focus toward helping others, and was most interested in doing this through a fitness setting. Starting in 2003, I worked in the management side of fitness, but was more interested in training. In my mid-20s, I really made the connection between the exercises that I was doing and the importance of proper nutrition. Using both these elements I went on to compete in a fitness model competition in 2007 and to become a Certified Personal Trainer through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) the same year.
In 2009 my son was born and my daughter in 2012. I have gotten my body back in to shape from both and know that no matter what your background you can get your body in to the best shape of your life. I personally have transformed my body multiple times from multiple scenarios and have come to respect and love it at every step of the way. My goal in the Bright Fitness venture is to help people streamline their goals and results every step of the way. In my journey I have made mistakes, I have had successes, and I want to take what I have learned to help take the guesswork out of your health and fitness journey."
