Find What Motivates You!

Maybe you love to workout, or maybe it’s a chore that you may or may not force yourself to do. Either way, just about everybody suffers from low motivation at some point in time. This could be ok, but giving in to your lack of motivation and skipping a workout can actually lead to even lower motivation and skipping more often – it’s a vicious cycle!

To fix this, you must find positive motivation, and get in to a routine. You will notice that your motivation increases, and suddenly it’s a victorious cycle!

Here are a few ideas to help find (and keep) your motivation:

  • Find a race or other type of event to sign up for. Having something to train for, even if it’s just for fun, is a wonderful motivator. Here at Bright Fitness, we are training for a Warrior Dash in May. We’ve never done one before, and on days when a strength training circuit just seems unbearable, I think about not finishing and I’m ready to go!

  • Get a workout buddy! Set your workouts and times, and knowing that someone is counting on you to do it with them is one of the most powerful motivators there is.

  • If you can’t get an in person buddy, set up with a friend or a group to check in with each other once you’ve completed a workout. Having a support system can make or break your exercise routine.

  • Don’t go home! If your goal is to work out after your work day is over, take your gym clothes with you and head there straight after work. Heading home and thinking you will go back out is a motivation killer!

  • Hire a trainer, someone to help you with a plan and keep you on track. Not having a clear direction and set of goals can make sticking with exercise hard, and if your goals are too general, it’s difficult to make action steps to accomplish them. A well-qualified trainer or coach can work with you to develop a clear goal, and make the appropriate steps to reach that goal. A clear and doable action plan is one of the most motivating tools there is.

One thing that all these ideas have in common is the accountability factor. You need to be accountable for your workout. So find a strategy that works for you, and get moving!
