Today’s recipe makes a quick, easy, and delicious breakfast…with each of the 4 ingredients benefiting your heart. Let’s have a quick rundown:
Oatmeal: One of the key heart healthy ingredients in oatmeal is soluble fiber. This type of fiber helps to keep blood sugar levels steady, and can lower your LDL ‘bad’ blood cholesterol. In addition, this grain contains magnesium, potassium, folate, niacin, and calcium; all important to your heart! Just make sure you use plain ‘Old Fashioned’ oats with no additives.
Walnuts: An excellent source of plant omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, folate, fiber, and heart-favorable mono- and polyunsaturated fats, and phytosterols. These are key elements in reducing inflammation and a smoothly functioning heart and blood vessels.
Banana: High in potassium and low in salt, bananas are known for helping to lower blood pressure, and protect against heart attack and stroke.
Cinnamon: Not officially known for its heart benefits, however recent research has demonstrated cinnamon’s ability to reduce inflammation in the body, which is a benefit to all systems.
Recipe: Bring 1 cup of water to boil on high, add ½ cup ‘Old Fashioned’ oats and reduce heat to medium-low. Stir oats occasionally for approximately 5 minutes until all the water is absorbed (or desired consistency is reached). Add ¼ cup walnuts, ½ sliced banana, and ½ tablespoon cinnamon. Mix together and enjoy!
